About Newcastle Museum
After years of negotiations and hard work, Newcastle Museum was born in 1988. The vision began with a consortium of the Institution of Engineers and Supernova Inc., who sought to create an educational site for regional history at Honeysuckle Railway Workshops. Unfortunately, that plan failed, but their pursuit didn’t; they successfully obtained the Castlemaine Brewery, which became home to the museum until 2008 when it moved its operations down Hunter Street into its new abode – also located close by time-honoured Honeysuckle Railway Workshops!
Newcastle Museum is the ideal destination for locals and visitors alike to enhance their knowledge of this vibrant city significantly. Established in 1988 as a Bicentennial project, the newest iteration of Newcastle Regional Museum opened its doors on 4 August 2011 in historic Honeysuckle Railway workshops at the very heart of King’s City. This reinvigorated facility offers an inviting environment where contemporary exhibitions and engaging programs are made possible through sustainable services – providing ample opportunities to learn more about what makes up our remarkable metropolis!

What to do at Newcastle Museum
Visitors to Newcastle Museum are invited on a journey back in time as they explore the classic railway architecture of three incredible Honeysuckle Railway Workshops. Listed with the National Trust, visitors can marvel at structures such as the Locomotive Boiler Shop, New Erecting Shop and Blacksmith and Wheel Shops – each filled with tales of years past.
Newcastle Museum, housed in the historic Locomotive Boiler Shop, is an iconic example of Victorian Romanesque Architecture. Originally designed to fit a large overhead ‘Craven’ crane, it operated from 1882-1929 before being used as a timber mill and then for diesel-powered power stations. After almost 90 years since its construction, Supernova—the interactive science exhibit—now resides here, providing visitors with the opportunity to explore unique tech aspects with modern excitement!
